Let's build the Rolling Chassis for 10000
PHASE 1: MODIFYING THE CHASSIS
The chassis is currently on our Sturgeon wagon, having been lifted by two giant cranes and turned upside down so we can access the under side. The approach of using a wagon was selected because the chassis must remain mobile within Wirksworth yard.
The class 58 design does not have a central pivoting point on which the bogie swivels, so a design has been formulated to create one suitable for the EM2 bogies. Once this design is approved independently, we can refurbish the chassis and add the necessary features.
We are currently exploring the option to have this work done commercially (and so faster) and that would be subject to a fundraising appeal.
Phase 2: Refurbishing the bogies
The bogies require complete overhaul including re profiling of the tyres, fitting of stronger suspension springs, modification of the braking system.
We can create a rolling chassis before the springs and braking system have been attended to.
The final task is to fit six overhauled traction motors. The estimated cost for the traction motors is up to £20,000 each. We will know more accurately when we remove the one in worst condition for evaluation.
Education
We will expand our educational package to share the story of the bogies, Class EM2, Metropolitan Vickers and associated themes, within the context of Britain in the 1940-70 period. This will comprise of displays within Centenary Works, downloadable material and videos. This will include an explanation of how such machinery works. We have begun the educational package with our leaflet "10000 and its place in history".
